Therefore, it is necessary to expand the supermarket alliance to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic bags in Viet Nam, with the participation of businesses and retailers nationwide.
More information at the seminar summarizing the pilot project “Initiative to establish a supermarket alliance to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic bags in Viet Nam”, taking place on April 20, a representative of the Institute of Strategy and Policy on natural resources and environment says plastic pollution is considered one of the most pressing environmental problems.
According to ISPONRE, on average, the number of single-use plastic bags in Vietnamese supermarkets, currently accounts for about 104,000 bags/day, equivalent to 38 million plastic bags/year (of which 46/48 supermarkets are providing free plastic bags; on average, each supermarket consumes about 1,454 plastic bags per day).
Plastic products and nylon bags have become an indispensable part of many people’s lives. However, due to the durable and non-degradable characteristics of plastic products, single-use plastic bags have been polluting the environment, leaving unpredictable consequences for human health and animals, plants on earth.
Aware of the serious risk of plastic waste to the environment, from 2020, Institute of Strategy and Policy on natural resources and environment in collaboration with the Ha Noi Department of Industry and Trade has implemented the project “Initiative to establish an supermarkets alliance to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic bags”, in order to establish and operate an alliance of supermarkets to jointly offer solutions to reduce the use of single-use plastic bags in supermarkets and switch to use more eco-friendly bags.
Within the framework of the above project, the Alliance of retailers to reduce plastic bags was established with the participation of 16 members in Ha Noi.
In the past time, the project has closely coordinated with Ha Noi Department of Industry and Trade and retailers to carry out activities such as signing cooperation agreements between members of the alliance; mobilized the participation of many initiatives related to plastic waste reduction, thereby gradually changing the behavior of customers.
With the achieved results, Mr. Nguyen Trung Thang, Deputy Director of Institute of Strategy and Policy on natural resources and environment, expressed that in the coming time, he will continue to call for support from ministries, branches and localities, as well as as sponsors to expand the Alliance of Retailers to reduce plastic bags not only in Ha Noi but across the country.
In the immediate future, Institute of Strategy and Policy on natural resources and environment will coordinate with Ha Noi Department of Industry and Trade and retail units to implement the plan “No plastic bags Day” implementing communication activities to change customers’ behavior in reducing single-use plastic bags; implement the plan to reduce plastic bags in the whole system.
