Kick off RSI in Vietnam’s Northern region

Ninh Bình, August 6, 2025 – UNDP Vietnam, with support from The Coca-Cola Foundation (TCCF) and in collaboration with Vikohasan, held the launch event for the Responsible Sourcing Initiative (RSI) in the Northern region. The initiative aims to build a responsible, transparent, and equitable recycled plastic supply chain in the area.

The event also included consultations on the results of a baseline survey assessing social responsibility compliance according to the Harmonized Responsible Sourcing Framework. Participants co-designed priority interventions to enhance responsible sourcing practices throughout the value chain.

Mr. Hoang Thanh Vinh, UNDP’s Waste, Plastics, and Circular Economy Programme Manager, shared: “Every day, Hanoi alone generates nearly 1,000 tons of plastic waste. The informal workforce, who quietly collect scraps and waste, make a significant contribution by collecting over 50% of PET bottles for recycling. However, they still face many disadvantages: they are not officially recognized, their working conditions are poor, and they lack access to finance, healthcare, and education.”

The Responsible Sourcing Initiative is expected to help strengthen the rights of informal workers through a whole-supply-chain approach. This will enhance social responsibility throughout the lifecycle of plastic waste, from collection by informal collectors, to sorting and initial processing at scrap yards and baling stations, to production of semi-finished and finished products at recycling facilities and brand manufacturers.

Mr. Jeff Denby, Senior Director of Circular Economy at TCCF, stated: “The Coca-Cola Foundation is proud to support this UNDP initiative, which aims to improve the livelihoods of informal waste workers and collect plastic waste in a more transparent and responsible manner.”

The workshop also featured a presentation on updated business compliance policies for the scrap industry under Decree 70/2025/ND-CP, Resolution No. 204/2025/QH15, and Resolution 198/2025/QH15. Additionally, the event included a tour of the VIKOHASAN factory.

The workshop attracted participants not only from scrap yards and recycling facilities but also from development organizations, microfinance institutions, banks, brands, and research units related to the circular economy.
