Workshop summarizing the project of establishing a supermarket alliance to reduce the consumption of plastic bags

The workshop was organized by the Institute of Strategy and Policy on natural resources and environment (ISPONRE) in collaboration with the Ha Noi Department of Industry and Trade and the French Agency for International Technical Cooperation (Expertise France) organized a Seminar to summarize the pilot project “Initiative to establish a supermarket alliance to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic bags in Viet Nam” (PLASTIC ALLIANCE Project). The seminar attracted more than 100 live and online delegates representing donors, government agencies, partners to reduce plastic waste, domestic and foreign NGOs, and retailers.

PLASTIC ALLIANCE project is a pilot activity of the Project “Rethinking Plastics – Circular Economy Solutions for Marine Waste” (Rethinking Plastics) funded by the European Union (EU) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through the German Cooperation Agency (GIZ) and the French Agency for International Technical Cooperation (Expertise France) to promote retailers to use eco-friendly bags, contribute to reduce plastic waste, single-use nylon bags. Within the framework of PLASTIC ALLIANCE Project, the Alliance of Retailers to Reduce Plastic Bags was established with the participation of 16 members.

During the implementation of activities, the Project has closely coordinated with the Ha Noi Department of Industry and Trade and retailers to implement the Alliance’s activities such as signing a cooperation agreement between the members of the Union, consult with Alliance members on the Alliance’s action plan and communication plan, implement direct communication programs at retailers and online on social networking platforms to change change consumer behavior in reducing the use of nylon bags and single-use plastic products.

The Alliance’s activities have received active support from retailers and partners to reduce plastic waste, contributing to spreading the message of limiting the use of plastic bags and plastic products. once.

“The implementation of the Union’s activities has contributed to the implementation of Plan 266/KH-UBND dated November 25, 2021 on the implementation of the national action program on sustainable production and consumption in 2022 in the province. “In the near future, we want to expand the Alliance of retailers to reduce plastic bags not only in Ha Noi but also across the country as well as attract the participation of more businesses and retailers,” Nguyen Trung Thang, Deputy Director of ISPONRE shared.

“The project’s communication activities have been widely deployed in various forms, spreading the message of reducing plastic bag consumption to a wider audience,” said Mrs. Fanny Quertamp, representative of Expertise France.

In the coming time, the project will continue to coordinate with members of the Alliance to implement communication activities to change customer behavior, collaborate with retailers to develop and implement a plan to reduce plastic bags throughout the system, while continuing to expand the scope and activities of the Alliance.
