Reusing scrap in wood processing: Helps businesses increase profits

The wood industry currently has more than 5,800 businesses with 340 craft villages. Wood by-products account for a fairly high proportion of volume, greatly affecting the profits of businesses. Instead of discarding by-products, currently, wood scraps at factories are used to provide heat for boilers, instead of using coal or oil as before, helping to protect the environment and reduce CO2 emissions.

In addition, the use of wood scraps to produce pellets, industrial wood materials (MDF), particle boards, and laminated boards contributes to improving the efficiency of raw material use and environmental protection.

At Phu Tai Joint Stock Company (Binh Dinh), wood by-products are used as energy pellets and fuel for the factory’s boiler system. Thanks to that, the company has saved hundreds of billions of dong each year from utilizing processing by-products as fuel for wood drying boilers and revenue from producing energy pellets, increasing total profit by 2 – 3%.

Wood scraps after processing at factories can be collected for concentrated production of energy products. Energy products such as wood pellets, sawdust, and wood charcoal have contributed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Some large factories and wood processing clusters have applied the model of reusing factory by-products to create valuable products…

It can be affirmed that the transition from a linear economic model to a circular economy not only brings practical and clear economic benefits to businesses but also to the community and business partners. In particular, reducing CO2 emissions in production will contribute to realizing Vietnam’s commitment to reduce net emissions to zero by 2050.

However, to model a circular economy, green production, and sustainability in the field of forest product processing, Vietnam needs to invest and build circular economy models in wood processing production suitable to the conditions of businesses. Along with that, support and encourage businesses to innovate technology; and propagate and raise awareness about the effectiveness of the circular economy.
