Success story : Siegwerk collaborates with DG press to enable the production of recyclable mono-material coffee pouches

Coffee is extremely sensitive to external factors such as sun, oxygen or humidity. Hence, having a good packaging solution for coffee should ensure that the quality, aroma and taste remains intact. In a recent project, Siegwerk and DG Press cooperated in the development and realization of a mono-PE material coffee bag with enhanced oxygen barrier properties by applying a barrier coating, printing inks, and an OPV in all in one pass.

A MDO (machine direction oriented) polyethylene laminate/polyethylene laminate was surface printed with Cirkit Oybar barriera coating 1582 to achieve the required oxygen barrier. The colored ink and Cirkit Heatguard were overprinted on top of the oxygen barrier lacquer. Cirkit Heatguard enables the sealing process and protects the oxygen barrier lacquer from humidity. Cirkit Oxybar also enables superior de-inkability during the recycling process under DIN conditions. The pouches can be recycled and yield a very high quality recyclate.

DG press, a leading manufacturer of hybrid web offset presses, and Siegwerk, a world-leading supplier of inks and coatings, proudly present the Mono-PE coffee bag.

In response to the growing demand for sustainable packaging solutions, DG press has developed a cutting-edge printing and coating platform for the food packaging industry designed to enhance the properties of mono-material packaging by applying functional coatings while simultaneously applying printed graphics and varnish in one pass.

Besides an enhanced oxygen barrier the coating also provides fast and easy de-inking. Since VietNam is the second biggest producer of coffee globally, this solution might be an interesting application for the Vietnamese circular packaging scene.
