Mobilizing business action starts with the recognition of the issues and opportunities for circular economy, and acknowledging business responsibility for the life cycle resource use, wastage, emissions and other environmental impacts of products and services put on markets by business. This involves firms taking the responsibility for the impacts of the activities and decisions of business on environment, the main trust of (corporate) social responsibility (CSR). This is intrinsically intertwined with other CSR core subjects, particularly corporate governance, fair operating practices and labour. The ASEAN CSR Network with the financial support of the EU SWITCH Asia Policy Support Component has set out to catalyse and facilitate business consensus seeking and action – individually and collectively – on circular economy in ASEAN, with an initial focus on Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines,Thailand and Viet Nam.

A hybrid scoping workshop is being convened with select business and industry representatives to kick start this business action. The specific objective is two-fold:

  1. To clarify the scope, opportunities and relevance for business action on circular economy for ASEAN Member States, with a view to contribute to a unifying understanding of the circular economy, its criticality for ASEAN Member States and its business rationale; and
  2. To identify elements of business commitment, potential individual and collective action, accountability, advocacy and knowledge management for the adoption of circular economy, with a view to shape and formalize business commitment to and action for circular economy in ASEAN.

This invitation only hybrid workshop will bring together the core team of ACN and SWITCH Asia PSC with a few interested business representatives from each of the initial five target countries. These would be expected to have some familiarity with issues and challenges for implementation of the circular economy in their home country and be associated with a business entity in the country (firm, association, chamber or alike).
