In the series of post-training activities of the Circular Economy Capacity Building Program for Enterprises in Viet Nam implemented by UNDP Viet Nam, the Embassy of the Netherlands and other stakeholders, the Workshop on “Wastewater circulation” was held on the morning of September 28, 2022 with the online and offline participation of more than 100 delegates, experts, representatives of organizations and enterprises.
In the opening speech, Mr. Dao Xuan Lai – Head of Climate Change and Environment Unit, UNDP Viet Nam shared the current situation of wastewater treatment in Viet Nam. As of 2021, there were 563 industrial parks in the Industrial Park Development Plan in this country, and only 66% of them had centralized wastewater treatment stations. Some industrial parks had centralized wastewater treatment stations but they did not work effectively. Most enterprises in Viet Nam do not have a wastewater treatment model. He hoped that enterprises would have the opportunity to connect and learn about international and Vietnamese wastewater treatment through this workshop, thereby enhancing efficiency in their wastewater treatment and circulation, together aiming to net zero emissions.
Participating in the conference, Prof. Harry Futselaar, from Saxion University of Applied Sciences, gave a presentation on technologies and experiences in implementing wastewater treatment and wastewater circulation.
Among the enterprises selected for post-training support from the Circular Economy Capacity Building Program, 4 businesses took part in the workshop and presented their difficulties in wastewater treatment.
Nam Cau Kien Industrial Park’s used water was treated and achieved level B of the industrial wastewater standards. However, they wanted to find an effective model to reuse wastewater and create a wastewater circulation in the plant, or even sell the treated water to investors.
DL Group raised questions related to the costs of applying wastewater treatment and circulation in the livestock sector.
Marie’s – the Lepironia of Hue corporates directly with farmers in product producing and distributing. Noticing that their production was still traditional and the wastewater treatment was not focused, Marie’s wanted to build a simple wastewater treatment system that would be suitable for the farmers, making their business model more sustainable and recognized with the eco-friendly certification.
Tra My Natural Products Limited Company desired to have a small-size wastewater treatment model that would be suitable for its current production scale.
At the end of the workshop in the morning, international and Vietnamese experts also addressed enterprises’ concerns about wastewater treatment technologies and made suggestions on policy development, technical guidelines, international cooperation, and technology transfer. In the afternoon, the offline participants had a visit to the circular wastewater treatment model in Nam Cau Kien Industrial Park.
From the results achieved at the workshop, UNDP Viet Nam and the related parties will conduct specific discussions to solve the problems of each enterprise and support them in building a road map for wastewater management and circulation in their journey to a circular economy in the near future.
