Circular economy training boosts sustainable practices in agriculture
In May and July 2024, two impactful training programs focused on promoting circular economy practices within key agricultural value chains in Viet Nam.
Coffee Value Chain (Son La Province): This training emphasized practical applications of the circular economy, such as reusing coffee husks for composting and utilizing wastewater for irrigation. A total of 80 participants, including farmers, commune representatives, and researchers, gained valuable knowledge and skills.
Rice Value Chain (Mekong Delta): In collaboration with GIZ and aligned with the program for 1 million hectares of high-quality-low-emissions rice, two comprehensive 3-day training sessions were held in An Giang and Dong Thap provinces. These sessions delved into various aspects of circular agriculture, including rice straw management, mushroom cultivation, compost production, and the development of circular business models. A diverse group of 68 participants, comprising government officials, extension workers, farmers, and researchers, benefited from these sessions.
Significant Impact: The training programs significantly enhanced farmers’ capacity to implement circular practices.
- Coffee Value Chain: The percentage of farmers able to reuse coffee husks for composting surged from 36% to 97%, and confidence in reusing wastewater for irrigation increased dramatically from 15% to 61%.
- Rice Value Chain: Following the training, 78% of participants reported a “good or very good” understanding of circular practices in the rice value chain, a substantial increase from the initial 41%.
Knowledge Sharing through Video: To further disseminate the training content and extend its reach, the project team produced two video series:
- Coffee Value Chain: This series of four videos captures the key elements of the training on circular economy practices in the coffee value chain in Son La.
- Rice Value Chain: This video series documents the training on circular economy practices in the rice value chain in the Mekong Delta.
These videos were distributed to extension workers in Son La, An Giang, and Dong Thap provinces to support ongoing farmer training sessions.
