Navigating sustainability by eco design Events

and others from different business units should discuss sustainability and reflect the strategies and goals set by the sustainability department on their own in their products and innovations. Against this background, Japan is working on two main things in promoting sustainability at Philips. One is community development. Since 2019, Philips has been building Centers of Excellence and Community of Practice, an online platform where experts in departments can share the latest information on sustainability goals, challenges, training and best practices. These are like internal Facebook, available on platform services Viva Engage and SharePoint, with more than 8,000 people, or 10% of the global workforce. Some communities range from general groups wanting to learn more about sustainability to specialized technical topics such as plastic packaging and circular design, where employees can deepen their knowledge of sustainability and discuss issues and innovation. The other is training to bring sustainability and circular economy into the business. For real internal change, we need to be clear about what a circular economy means to each person in design and finance. So, we developed a dedicated training curriculum on various aspects of circular design. One of its curricula is the XD Sustainability Learning Journey for designers in more than 10 design fields. The goal of this training is to apply the skills and confidence gained by participants to their projects, and the curriculum also incorporates a training module from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. The training recognizes members who have completed certain courses as "circular champions”. So far, around 50 people in the design community have been recognized as circular champions, which are informal roles but have helped drive and accelerate the circular economy. By building these communities, you have a better understanding of what's going on in your organization, what's not going on and where the difficulties lie, and if they don't work, you can escalate the voice of the field to management.
