Organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Viet Nam in collaboration with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and the Institute of Agriculture and Environment (IAE), the workshop provided a platform to introduce the WasteWise tool, discuss its potential applications, and gather technical inputs to further refine the system in response to user needs and policy priorities.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Vu Thai Truong, Head of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Unit at UNDP Viet Nam, highlighted the importance of strengthening data-based tools for circular transition. He noted that, “One of the major barriers today is the lack of suitable tools to systematically collect, store and analyse data, as well as support decision-making based on a comprehensive assessment of technical, economic, environmental and social aspects.” He also reaffirmed UNDP’s commitment to working with partners to promote innovative, data-driven, and user-friendly tools that can be accessed and applied effectively by different stakeholder groups.
The event highlighted the growing importance of digital and evidence-based tools in advancing circular economic solutions in agriculture and organic waste management. As organic waste continues to increase and poses risks to the environment when not properly managed, stakeholders underscored the need for practical tools that can help identify suitable solutions, improve planning, and support more informed decision-making by policymakers, practitioners, and local actors.
Through presentations, live demonstrations, and open discussion, participants shared recommendations on improving the tool’s usability, strengthening its data foundation, and enhancing its relevance for different user groups, including farmers, cooperatives, businesses, and government agencies. The workshop also reaffirmed the importance of ensuring that such tools are not only technically sound but also accessible, user-oriented, and grounded in local implementation realities.

At the workshop, the Circular Agriculture website, integrated with the Viet Nam Circular Economy Hub website, was also introduced. The Circular Agriculture website has been developed as an open platform to consolidate information, data, and practical solutions, thereby enabling government agencies, businesses, cooperatives, researchers, and practitioners to more easily access suitable circular agriculture models.
