Webinar: Enhancing Value and Sustainable Development of Vietnam’s Coffee Industry

For many years, coffee has consistently been one of Vietnam’s key export commodities and a crucial link in agricultural trade with the EU. However, behind the impressive growth figures lie increasingly evident challenges: the expansion of agricultural production has contributed to resource degradation, increased pressure on forests, and reduced the ability to adapt to climate change.

In this context, new requirements from international markets, particularly frameworks such as the European Green Deal, EUDR, and regulations on sustainability assessment and reporting, are gradually reshaping how coffee is produced and traded. Beyond just quality and productivity, the Vietnamese coffee industry must increasingly meet higher environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards if it wants to maintain and expand its export market.

Against this backdrop, the project “Enhancing Value and Sustainable Development of the Vietnamese Coffee Industry (2025–2028)” is being prepared for implementation as an initiative to promote this transformation in a more substantive and inclusive way. The project, implemented by SNV and the Institute for Sustainable Management and Development (MSD), with support from the European Union, focuses on two key coffee-producing regions: Lam Dong and Son La. Instead of approaching each actor individually, the project builds a systems approach, targeting the entire coffee industry ecosystem. The focus is on supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), cooperatives, and related organizations to gradually integrate ESG practices into their business models through training, technical advice, and connections to appropriate financial resources. A notable aspect of the project’s approach is the combination of capacity building, development of practical tools (such as ESG criteria and online resource platforms), and market incentives, through investment networking activities and recognition of pioneering models.
