Waterway waste is an increasingly urgent challenge for river and coastal cities across Viet Nam. With appropriate financial mechanisms and innovative technologies, these challenges can be transformed into opportunities for greener, more resilient development.

UNDP, together with the Departments of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho and Quang Ninh, is convening the online webinar:
“From Waste Flows to Value Streams: Financing Sustainable River, Bay and Coastal Waste Management.”

The event will highlight two pioneering provincial efforts to establish techno-economic norms and financial frameworks for floating-waste collection—a foundational step for transparent budgeting, consistent operations, and scalable models nationwide.

Key focus areas include:

  • Lessons from Can Tho and Quang Ninh on developing cost norms for waterways
    • Practical models for waste collection on rivers, canals, bays and coastal waters
    • Demonstrations from Vietnamese and international innovators
    • Financing tools that support long-term, sustainable waste management
    • Collaboration among government, public service providers, private sector and community initiatives
