By transforming rice straw into compost, this approach not only tackles waste management but also introduces a sustainable income source for cooperatives, aligning with the principles of profitability and environmental responsibility. The success of such a venture not only contributes to the local economy but also showcases a profitable and sustainable model towards the efficient utilization of rice straw by-products in the broader context of green innovations within the agriculture and food sector in Viet Nam.

This leaflet was developed within the framework of the above component based on the technical guidelines of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and IRRI. It provides basic and concise information on producing organic fertilizer from straw waste after mushroom cultivation applying mechanization. It is suitable for use in relevant training of cooperatives and farmers.

Rice straw management is the most critical aspect of the rice VC in the Mekong Delta. Green Innovation Center Vietnam aims to create innovations in rice straw management in both technical and economic interventions. In 2021, on behalf of BMZ, in cooperation with MARD/CPMU/PPMUs of GIC Vietnam, GIZ are supporting 04 cooperatives in 04 provinces An Giang, Dong Thap, Can Tho, and Kien Giang, to receive the modern model of compost turner machine, aimed to produce the rice straw compost at cooperative level and enlarge the products to vertical horizontal to other agriculture sectors such as high demand fruits and vegetable productions.

The training document was compiled from pertinent technical guidelines of MARD and technically reviewed by experts of IRRI. This internal document aims to make it easier for farmers and trainers to learn about sustainable straw management, apply mechanization, and create a new ‘Farm to Farm’ business model for the rice straw industry.

The maritime traffic has been increasing worldwide during the last 20 years. This has resulted in a much stronger focus on the environmental impact from Government and NGO´s, and lately also from the shipping industry. Illegal operational discharges of oily waste especially in coastal areas has drawn the attention the this, but especially the increasing volume of plastic found in the oceans of which a significant part derives from the maritime traffic is worrying. Internationally, the IMO Convention on Marine Pollution, MARPOL regulates the maritime traffic regarding the management of ship-generated waste and cargo residues and provides recommendations to ports on how to ensure sustainable collection of such waste without causing the ships any undue delays.
