Green Energy Transition: A Driver of Sustainable Growth

(NLĐO) Green energy transition is no longer a choice, but has become an inevitable requirement. On April 21, Tuổi Trẻ Newspaper and the Packaging Recycling Organization Vietnam (PRO Vietnam), in coordination with the Department of Climate Change under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and the Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam Youth Federation, announced the key contents of the “Green Vietnam 2026” project and organized the workshop “Green Energy Transition: A Driver of Sustainable Growth” to seek solutions to promote a substantive and effective green energy transition.

In the context of many fluctuations in the energy market, especially as the supply of oil, gas, and petroleum products is affected by the global situation, the need to promote the use of new fuels and green fuels and to reduce dependence on fossil fuels has become more urgent than ever. Alongside this, the process of energy transition toward a green, clean, and sustainable direction is not only linked to emission reduction targets, but is also an important condition for ensuring sustainable socio-economic growth and improving the adaptive capacity of businesses in the new period.

Mr. Bui Minh Thanh, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, speaking at the event.

The “Green Vietnam 2026” project was launched in April 2024. After two years of implementation, the project has organized nearly 20 activities, including workshops, competitions, and tours to green factories and enterprises. The Green Vietnam Festival in Ho Chi Minh City alone has become an annual highlight of the project, attracting more than 33,000 visitors, distributing more than 28,000 green gifts, and collecting nearly 30,000 units of recyclable waste through the “Exchange Waste for Gifts” programme at the event.

Continuing this journey, the “Green Vietnam 2026” project is implementing the theme “Green Transition: Sustainable Effectiveness,” which includes various activities such as a series of thematic workshops, talk shows and podcasts, the “Discover Green Enterprises” programme, the Green Vietnam trekking race, the Green Vietnam Festival 2026, the Green Vietnam Award 2026, the “Green Ideas” competition, and the writing contest “Creating the Future of Agriculture.”

Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Ha, Vice Chairwoman of the Packaging Recycling Organization Vietnam (PRO Vietnam), said that green energy transition is no longer a choice, but has become an inevitable requirement. However, for this transition to be truly effective, a comprehensive approach is needed, in which energy, resources, and waste management are viewed within the same circular ecosystem.

At the event, Mr. Bui Minh Thanh, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, said that the world is entering a period of profound transformation, where energy, technology, and the environment converge to form an axis of global strategic competition. In this context, major cities must not only adapt, but also proactively move ahead, lead, and shape new development trends. The city has clearly identified green transition, digital transformation, and innovation as three overarching strategic pillars.

The city is implementing a green transition project for the 2025 to 2035 period, with 10 pillars and 76 specific indicators, requiring the mobilization of approximately VND 900,000 trillion in resources. Economic growth is being linked with improvements in environmental quality and people’s quality of life. Throughout the entire green transition process, energy transition is a key pillar. The city is implementing major orientations on renewable energy development, promoting efficient energy use, and developing green hydrogen and green ammonia. In the fields of urban development and transport, the city has set a target that by 2030, 100% of public transport vehicles will use clean energy.
