Recap the training program to enhance economic capacity for waste collection facilities and waste workers

May 2026 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Viet Nam, in partnership with Vikohasan Joint Stock Company and implementing partners, with support from The Coca-Cola Foundation (TCCF), provided insurance support and training on tax documentation, business registration, and financial management for waste aggregators, junkshops, and informal waste workers (IWWs) in Nghe An and Bac Ninh provinces.

The training sessions, held in Tam Da commune, Bac Ninh province on 2 April, and in Dien Chau commune, Nghe An province on 14 May, guided a total of 32 household businesses (with total around 800 waste workers), mainly waste collection junkshops, on tax declaration and payment procedures, business registration requirements, and their rights and obligations under current regulations.

By helping junkshops and IWWs better access the legal system and strengthen their financial management capacity, the initiative not only contributes to safeguarding their rights and interests, but also lays the foundation for a more sustainable, transparent and equitable recycling supply chain.

Mr. Pham Minh Tuan, General Director of Vikohasan Joint Stock Company, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to working alongside UNDP and actively supporting collection facilities (aggregations and junkshops). He emphasized the importance of improving market transparency and supplier practices, enhancing the sorting and collection of materials in a more responsible approach, and thereby reducing the negative environmental impacts of waste pollution.

In parallel, appropriate insurance packages were handed over to representatives of collection facilities for distribution to informal waste workers. This activity contributes to the project’s commitment to supporting 100 workers with access to insurance, training, and essential support services over a one-year period.

These activities form part of the broader efforts of the Plastic Circularity Project (TCCF project), supported by The Coca-Cola Foundation, to advance the Responsible Sourcing Initiative (RSI). The initiative seeks to strengthen economic capacity and improve working conditions for informal waste workers, a group that plays a crucial role in Viet Nam’s plastic waste collection and recycling value chain.
